Over the past 50 years Karl Volk has worked in various styles, not in sequence, different from day to day allowing each subject and medium to bring out different aspects. In this solo show at ASK, Volk presents diverse images from over twenty years of time. There are landscapes that are simply a response to the particular beauty of a place, paintings that make complex decisions about a world event perpetrated by the United States and then there are paintings or prints that arise from reveling in the process of making them.
Karl has exhibited widely in the Hudson Valley, including Barrett Art Center, Tivoli Art Gallery, Artist Collective of Hyde Park, Kent Ct. Art Center, Orange County Community College, Rockland County, Albany, and years ago in New York City.
“I may use photos by themselves as finished work or have it appear as one of the media in a mixed media piece. I never really discard anything. A piece may wait till a new understanding or material may finally make it work. I have attended many W/C workshops and many printing workshops and my 27 years of elementary art teaching have also taught me many approaches.
I think in many different ways about situations in the world and that is reflected in the nuances of my work. This solo show allows my sides to show. I hope you like variety as much as I do.”
