Each year since 2012, Saugerties artist Nancy Campbell has organized painting workshops in Italy for small groups of artists who are primarily from the Hudson Valley. This exhibit entitled, “Voyagers: Artists in Italy,” presents about 50 pieces from 14 artists who have traveled with Nancy and her husband Mike on their annual trip. The work depicts scenes from Ciociaria, a region southeast of Rome, sometimes known as the Roman Campagna. It was in the small hill towns of Piglio and Serrone that Nancy’s paternal grandparents grew up, and it is also where many of her relatives live today. In 2018, her group traveled to north-central Italy, to Emilia-Romagna, south of Bologna, and several of the artists will present work inspired by that region as well. The exhibit features work in diverse media including oil, watercolor, gouache, collage, printmaking and acrylic.
Some of the work was completed on location, some in the studio, but each piece reflects a unique perspective and interpretation of the Italian landscape–a landscape that has attracted artists since the 18th century, culminating in the masterpieces of Camille Corot who brought the Roman countryside to life in his paintings made during the first half of the 19th century.
Artists taking part in the exhibit are: Robert Barnes, Nancy Campbell, Marie Cole, Carol Davis, Robin Elliott (Ventura, Ca), Angela Gaffney-Smith, Pamela Murnan, Sharon Okada (Sacramento, CA), Sandra Scheuer, Linda Schultz, Roberta Sickler, Janet Siskind, Carol Slutzky-Tenerowicz and Madeline Soukis (New Jersey).
