“I investigate the effects of movement upon form. I draw the changes enacted on form when it is transformed by motion. The visual effect of motion on form can be delicate or brash, still or active. These gestures in space follow my intention. Sometimes, I begin with a word, descriptive of a movement. Each word is then considered spatially. The
word acts as the title of the drawing.
“The drawings become events in themselves with links to spatial phenomena where identity is amorphous. Utilizing divergent scale shifts from close up to vast distance, I attempt to capture the essence of a certain movement in a stop motion act of drawing. I seam tiers of pigment to one another until the density approaches a feeling of motion. My layering consists of dirt, ash, sawdust, pastel, ink, graphite, rust scraped from metals, pencils and conté crayon. I prefer a restrained ground palette as I aim for phosphorescence from my brighter colors. Often, the brighter colors act as a signal for physicality of motion.”
