PONÉ

September 28, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Join us for an evening of music for the 21st century with Poné Ensemble for New Music.

The Poné Ensemble for New Music will present the first of its Fall 2018 concerts at 7:30pm on Friday, September 28 at the Arts Society of Kingston in Kingston, NY. The performance will feature guest violinist Marla Rathbun who will perform Solilóquio for Solo Violin by Brazilian composer Marcos Lucas, who in 2017 was a visiting Fulbright scholar and composer at the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, Bloomington. He is also a member of Preludio 21, a group of composers founded in 1998, which promotes their own music through concert series, master classes and lectures throughout Brazil.

In addition to Solilóquio for Solo Violin by Marcos Lucas, the program will feature works by three other living composers —  Lori Laitman, David Mecionis, and Daniel Dorff (some of whom may be in attendance) — as well as Gordon Jacob (1895-1984) and George Antheil (1900-1959). Described by Fanfare Magazine as “one of the most talented and intriguing of living composers,” Lori Laitman, a Long Island resident, has composed multiple operas and choral works, and over 250 songs, setting texts by classical and contemporary poets (including those who perished in the Holocaust). Guest mezzo-soprano Maria Bedo-Calhoun will perform Laitman’s The Seed of Dream song cycle, accompanied by cello and piano, composed in 2004 and set to poetry by Abraham Sutzkever written during his time in the Vilna Ghetto during World War II.

David Mecionis is a composer, musician and copyist living and working in New York City. He has composed and arranged classical as well as rock music for both performance and recording and the US and in Europe. Mecionis’ Trio in Two Parts with an Interval Between for oboe, bassoon and viola, will feature guest violist, Christiana Fortune-Reader.

Other works on the program will include Sonata (Three Lakes) for Flute and Piano by Daniel Dorff, born in New Rochelle, NY, Duo for Clarinet and Bassoon by English composer, Gordon Jacob (1895-1984), and Sonatina for Violin and Cello by American avant-garde compoer, George Antheil (1900-1959).

Show is at 7.30, tickets are $20.
